Abstract
As emoticon has been widely used and market for emoticon is gradually growing, emoticon issues are increasingly gaining importance among social media and firms. Therefore, current research seeks to provide insights on the role of emoticons in management perspectives and to offer guideline regarding emticons’ potential use in firms’ effective communication strategies in CMC environment. Specifically, we attempt to explore integrated structural relationships among characters of graphic-based emoticon, self-expressive motive for emoticon, the usage satisfaction and the continuous usage intention of emoticon. In results of the empirical study, functional characters of emoticon including accuracy and rapidity influence self-expressive motive for emoticon positively. Experiential characters of emoticon including aesthetics and positive emotions such as enjoyments and pleasurement also have positive relationship with self-expressive motive. We verify that self-expressive motive for using emoticons was positively related usage satisfaction and continuous usage intention of emoticon. Finally we find the positive relationship between usage satisfaction and continuous usage intention of emoticon.
