Abstract

Based on social influence perspectives, we aimed to empirically investigated the effect of needs for conformity and needs for uniqueness as one of important emoticon usage motives on emoticon purchase intentions for MIM(mobile instant messenger). Also we verified the moderating role of cultural difference(Korea vs. China) on the relationship between these emoticon usage motives(e.g. needs for conformity and needs for uniqueness of using emoticon) and emoticon purchase intentions. As a result of the analysis, needs for conformity positively impacts on emoticon purchase intentions only for Korean. However, there was no significant main effect of needs for conformity on emoticon purchase intentions for Chinese. Needs for uniqueness of using emoticon positively affect emoticon purchase intentions in both Korean and Chinese consumers. The finding also showed that the effect of needs for conformity and needs for uniqueness of using emoticon on emoticon purchase intentions was moderated by cultural difference between Korea and China. In line with our predictions, the main effect of needs for conformity and needs for uniqueness of using emoticon on emoticon purchase intention was larger for Korean consumers than for China consumers. Practical, theoretical implication and this paper’s limitations are also discussed.
