비실시간 토론 중심 온라인 수업에 참여한 대학생의 경험 탐색: 인격적 관계 형성을 중심으로

초록

본 연구의 목적은 비실시간 온라인 토론에 참여한 대학생들의 경험을 통해 CMC 기반의 환경에서 맺는 인격적 관계의 특성을 탐색하는 것에 있다. 여기서 인격적 관계 형성의 의미는 인간이 서로 자신의 의견을 드러냄으로써 자신의 누구인지를 드러내고 타자를 인식할 수 있다고 주장하는 철학자 한나 아렌트의 관점을 참조하였다. 그리고 이 관계의 형성이 컴퓨터를 매개한 문자기반 소통방식에 영향을 받을 수 있다는 점을 고려하여, 한 학기 동안 비실시간 토론중심 온라인 수업에 참여한 D광역시 소재 대학생들을 대상으로 집단 심층면담을 실시하고 면담자료를 분석하였다. 분석결과, 첫째, 온라인에서 대면과 다른 모습을 보이는 온라인용 자아의 노출 현상이 발견되었다. 둘째, 동료의 외양보다 그의 생각에 집중하고 소통하는 인지적 상호작용의 특성을 보였다. 셋째, 모든 동료의 의견을 살펴보기 보다는 선별적으로 취하면서 선택적 관계를 맺는 모습을 보였다. 넷째, 동료의 의견에 대해 비판을 제기하거나 남의 비판을 수용하는 데 있어 대면상황에 비해 심리적 저항감이 적은 것으로 나타났다. 다섯째, 타인의 실재감을 점차적으로 느끼게 되었고, 사회적 친밀감보다는 인지적 친밀감 형성이 용이한 것으로 드러났다. 여섯째, 수업이라는 맥락이 익명성을 제거하기 때문에 얼굴을 보지 않은 동료 학습자들에게 자신을 더 나은 사람으로 보이게 하는 방식은 내용적으로 우수한 의견을 제시하려는 모습으로 나타났다. 이를 통해 본 연구는 온라인 자아의 진정성에 대한 교육적 성찰의 계기를 제공할 필요가 있다고 보았으며, 동료의 실재감을 느낄 수 있도록 그의 개성이나 내면을 드러낼 기회를 마련하여 온라인에서도 공통감을 발휘할 수 있는 조건을 마련하고, 선택적 관계 맺기를 방지할 수 있는 의견 게시 방식의 다양화, 인지적 도전을 주는 적절한 과제의 제시와 같은 교육적 개입과 전략이 필요함을 제안하였다.

Abstract

The purpose of this research is to explore the formation of personal relationships in a computer-mediated communication environment by analyzing undergraduate students’ experiences of asynchronous online discussions. This research explored personal relationship formation based on Hannah Arendt arguing that people can disclose their identity within the context of the world through speech and deed. A focus group interview was conducted with students at a university located in D metropolitan city. Five students who have participated in asynchronous online discussions were recruited through purposive sampling. The interview data were analyzed using content analysis. We found the following six themes: 1) disclosing online persona which is different from face-to-face identity; 2) cognitive interaction focusing more on content than on appearance; 3) selective relationship formation through reading other students’ discussion posts; 4) reducing psychological resistance toward raising and accepting criticism in discussions; 5) gradual formation of friendships and greater ease in forming cognitive friendships than social friendships; 6) expanded learning possibilities while trying to show themselves as a better person through sharing well-written a posting. Based on the findings of this research, we propose the following implications: 1) helping students to perceive other people as real and achieve common sense in the online environment; 2) preventing students from having biased perspectives by forming selective relationships; 3) designing effective tasks and activities to facilitate cognitive thinking in a collaborative and interactive atmosphere.
