Abstract

This study aimed to measure the levels of social presence (SP) and cognitive learning engagement(CLE), and to investigate the development of these concepts and their relationships over time. This study, also, tried to check how the levels of SP and CLE affect students' achievements. Data were collected from eight-one undergraduate students taking an asynchronous online course in an online university through a rating scheme for SP and one for CLE and an online questionnaire for perceived SP and the satisfaction level of the course. The analyses revealed several important aspects. First, the subjects showed the highest frequencies in the affective area of the SP, but the level had been different over time. The subjects, especially, seemed to try to use more SP predictors for the accuracy and immediacy of the interaction around the end of the semester than the beginning. Second, the CLE was around the productive level, but the levels were various based on the subjects' prior achievements. Third, the levels of SP and CLE seemed to be understood with their quantitative activities in the discussions and the prior achievement levels. Fourth, the relationship between SP and CLE was negative. The more interesting finding, however, was that the efforts that the subjects put on could be different depending on the time, as SP tended to be reduced at the end of the semester, but CLE increased. Fifth, the contributions of SP and CLE to the achievement seemed to be various depending on the purposes of the discussion and the types of achievement used.
