Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the characteristics of learner interaction by the level of learning outcome and social presence in an online learning community. Data related to students’ learning outcomes, social presence, and textual interaction were collected during the four week long online project-based learning session and the messages were categorized by using qualitative content analysis. Participants were 21 undergraduate students in four learning communities at E university in Korea. The findings showed significant differences in interaction types and frequencies depending on the level of learning outcome and social presence. While the learning outcome significantly affected the types and frequencies of interaction, the effect of social presence on interaction was minimal. Learning outcome and social presence are significantly related to cognitive and emotional interactions, but not to social interactions. These results imply that learner interaction, especially cognitive and emotional, could be an critical indicator of the learning outcome in an online learning community.
