Abstract
Social and emotional competence (SEC) is recognized as an essential skill for future societies, influencing not only students’ academic performance but also their overall development and well-being. Nevertheless, traditional school environments often face difficulties in diagnosing SEC at the individual level and offering personalized support. Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and educational technology (EduTech) provide opportunities to address these challenges by enabling real-time monitoring of learners’ emotions and delivering tailored interventions. This study aimed to develop a prototype application to enhance elementary school students’ SEC. Following a design and development research framework, design principles were established through literature review and focus group interviews (FGI) with elementary teachers. Based on these principles, the application’s structure and key functions were designed and subsequently validated by experts. The findings yielded four categories and twelve design principles: (1) emotion data-based self-awareness and self-management, (2) promotion of social interaction and empathy, (3) personalized emotional support and growth facilitation, and (4) user-optimized system design. Using these principles, core features and dashboards for both teachers and students were developed. This study contributes by providing structured design principles and demonstrating the educational potential of emotion-centered learning analytics, thereby offering new directions for supporting SEC through digital learning environments.
