Abstract

School-based social and emotional learning (SEL) has been widely implemented worldwide as a promising approach to fostering youth’s social-emotional competence (SEC) and supporting their positive and holistic development. In South Korea, SEL has recently gained traction through new educational policy initiatives; yet, few empirical studies have examined the teachers’ perspectives and experiences, who are at the forefront of implementing SEL in practice. To address this gap, in-depth interviews were conducted with ten elementary school teachers to explore (1) their perceptions of the levels and patterns of students’ SEC, (2) the educational practices to promote SEL, and (3) their experiences of various factors shaping those practices. Participating teachers perceived elementary students as generally competent in recognizing and expressing their own traits and preferences but often lacking emotional awareness and expression. They also perceived that students’ awareness of diversity has improved, but their competence in understanding and interacting with others and the broader communities remains limited. Teachers implemented SEL across all SEC domains through three main approaches: free-standing activities, integration with academic subjects, and classroom management and guidance. Teachers also reported that both individual factors (e.g., teachers’ beliefs, competencies, and well-being) and contextual factors (e.g., students’ social-emotional needs, school resources and climate, family attitudes, laws) influenced their SEL practices. These findings have implications for future research, practice, and policy, including the need to support balanced SEC development among students and to re-examine and support the existing educational practices teachers have been employing from an SEL perspective. Furthermore, the study recommends enhancing teachers’ own SEC and well-being and cultivating educational environments to support teachers’ SEL practices.
