세계시민교육의 실천방향에 대한 철학적 성찰: 카신의 언어 논의를 중심으로

본 연구는 바바라 카신의 언어 논의를 중심으로 세계시민교육의 실천적 방향으로서 자기 정체성에 대한 재성찰을제시한다. 이를 위하여 본고는 오늘날 세계시민교육의 배경이 되는 담론으로서 세계화의 현상에 대한 분석과 세계시민성, 세계시민교육의 관련성을 간략히 탐색하였다. 관련하여, 세계시민성 개념의 형성에 영향을 준 세계시민주의 담론의역사적 배경을 고찰하고 오늘날 세계시민주의의 쟁점을 누스바움과 아피아의 논의를 중심으로 고찰하였다. 세계시민주의개념은 이방인의 추방 경험에서 비롯된 인류 보편성 담론, 국경국가의 등장에 따른 분쟁을 해소하기 위한 평화담론, 애국주의와 보편적 인류애로 요약되는 소속감과 애착심 담론으로 요약된다. 이를 토대로 본고에서는 오늘날 세계시민주의 담론의 근저에는 궁극적으로 개인이 이해하는 자기 정체성의 형성 문제와 관련됨을 확인하였다. 바바라 카신은인류 보편성과 애착심 간의 긴장을 아렌트의 이방인 경험 논의를 토대로 인간의 조건이 되는 언어의 속성으로서언어 다양성을 제시하며 그에 따른 자기 정체성에 대한 재성찰을 촉구한다. 교육의 일이란 우리가 건설하고자 하는세계의 언어를 점검하는 일에서 시작되어야 한다면 세계시민교육은 바로 자기 언어에서 형성되는 정체성에 대한사유에서 출발해야 함을 제안한다.
Abstract
This paper examines the idea of language in Barbara Cassin (2016) in relation to the current discourse of the identity issues in practice of global citizenship education. It first explores the phenomena of globalization in the world and global citizenship in education. This paper in particular focuses on the historical discourses of cosmopolitanism which have theoretically served the idea of global citizenship education. It discusses that they are related to the universal humanism based on the exile experience of Dionysus, the Kantian peace discourse suggested from the wars in the rise of nation and nationality, and the tensions in individual identity between the national/collective and the universal. In reading of Cassin (2016), this paper suggests that such tensions should be revisited through one’s understanding of identity based on the exile experience of language. Arendt eloquently describes her experience of exile in relation to the nature of language that is in faltering equivocity. This is the human condition in the sense of the unfamiliarity and the uncanniness in lives. In line with this, it suggests re-thinking of identity in its plurality in global citizenship education. It is the practice of education that is to re-visit the language in the world that we all share.
