Abstract
It is very natural that the vocabularies, expressions, grammar and sentences produced by foreign learners of Korean are not the same as those of native Korean produced. This paper discusses various characteristics of sentences which are made through back translation by advanced learners of Korean. The producers of the sentences are graduate students studying Korean translation as a foreign language, and they reach level 6th, the highest level of TOPIK, or Test of Proficiency in Korean, and thus they are eligible to be called very advanced learners. We analyzed (i) the causative constructions in Korean sentences, (ii) postpositional particles of Korean and their co-relative variations with neighboring sentences, (iii) connection in a sentence formed by the preceding interrogative clause and the following declarative clause, (iv) the usage of comma in a sentence, (v) topicalization by the change of word-order, and (vi) the usage of the demonstratives in a sentence. From the discussion we have found the following facts of the advanced learners of Korean. First, in long sentences, they fail to express the co-relational agreement properly and correctly, in particular, postpositional particles and referring expressions by the demonstratives such as ‘this(이), that(저)’ are main targets for their further study. Second, they still prefer to take easier expressions over the relatively harder ones they should accustom to use as translators. The fact that they reluctantly use syntactic causative expression but prefer to use causative forms made by the suffixes can be a good example. Third, they still have problems with the particles such as ‘은/는’ vs. ‘이/가’. Though ‘ignore the “difference that do not matter.”’ is one of the main guidelines in back translation, it is still important for the foreign learners to learn sophisticated systems and expression of target languages to be a near native translator.
