Abstract

In this study, we record the Korean plosives pronunciation of two distinct Korean learner groups (i.e. native Japanese and native Chinese speakers), and then use Praat to analyze their VOT values in order to contrast them with those of Korean native speakers. On this basis, we examine whether the Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis (CAH) or the Flege (1995)’s Speech Learning Model (SLM) is more suitable to explain the Korean plosives learning patterns. The CAH argues that if dissimilarities between L1 and L2 are high, then learning is slower due to the interference, and that if similarities between L1 and L2 are high, then learning is easier. On the contrary, the SLM argues that if similarities between L1 and L2 are high, then the learners have more difficulties in recognizing the L2 sounds, which makes learning more difficult, and that if dissimilarities between L1 and L2 are high, then learning is easier. As such, we can say that both hypotheses share similarities when they contrast L1 with L2 in order to understand learning of the L2, but bring contradictory results when it comes to predicting learning outcomes. Plosives in Korean are divided according to their aspiration into plain, aspirated, and tense, while plosives in Japanese are divided according to their voicing into voiceless and voiced. In Chinese, as in Korean, plosives are also divided according to their aspiration, but only into two groups, i.e. aspirated and unaspirated. Following the Contrastive Analysis Hypothesis, we made a prediction that the Japanese speakers would have the most difficulties in learning tense sounds among all the initial Korean plosives due to the fact that tense sounds in Japanese are realized only as middle sounds, and also predict that the Chinese speakers would face most difficulties in learning plain plosive sounds which do not exist in Chinese. However, measuring VOT of the initial plosives in Korean in this experiment showed that the Japanese speakers had difficulties in learning aspirated Korean plosives, while the Chinese speakers had difficulties in learning tense Korean plosives. Therefore, we can say that the Speech Learning Model is more convincing when it comes to explaining the characteristics of learning Korean plosives.
