The Production of Korean Stops and Intonation by English Speakers

초록

외국어의 음운습득에 관한 기존 연구는 주로 폐쇄음과 관련하여 후두자질의 대립이 두 가지인 언어 사이의 비교였다 (Flege 1991; MacKay et al., 2001; Harada 2003). 본 연구에서는 평음, 격음, 경음으로 세 가지 후두자질이 대립하는 한국어 폐쇄음을 유성자음과 무성자음의 두 가지 대립을 갖는 영어 화자가 어떻게 습득하는지를 연구한다. 또한 한국어의 억양을 영어화자가 어떻게 습득하는지도 연구한다. 음성실험에 모두 32명의 피실험자가 참가한다 (영어화자 24명, 한국어 화자 8명). 음성분석 결과 한국어 평음과 격음의 VOT가 한국인 화자에서는 비슷하나 모든 수준의 영어화자에서는 격음의 VOT가 유의미하게 평음의 VOT보다 길다. 그리고 한국어의 억양습득과 관련해서 영어화자에 따라 액센트구 초에서만 자음의 후두자질에 따라 다르게 실현되는 성조를 습득하는 정도가 다르다. 또한, 모든 수준의 영어화자가 한국어의 액센트구를 올바르게 실현하지 못한다. 본 연구는 학습기간이 긴 영어화자가 반드시 한국인 화자와 같은 패턴을 더 보이는 것은 아니어서 학습기간이 제 2언어 수준을 가늠할 수 있는 잣대가 될 수 없음을 보여준다. 본 연구의 의의는 외국어 습득에서 분절음뿐만 아니라 억양습득을 함께 연구한 것이다.
