Abstract
This study explored early adolescents’ media usage types during weekdays and weekends, identified influencing personal and environmental factors, and assessed their impact on smartphone addiction. Utilizing 2020 data from a study by the National Youth Policy Institute, latent profile, multinomial logistic, binary logistic, and multi regression analyses were conducted. The findings revealed the following: First, early adolescents’ media usage types on weekdays were classified as “general low usage”(71.5%), “game and entertainment YouTube usage”(11.6%), “TikTok usage”(9.2%), and “educational YouTube usage”(7.7%). For weekends, the types were identified as “TV usage”(72.1%), “game and entertainment YouTube usage”(20.5%), and “TikTok usage”(7.4%), which indicates different media usage patterns between weekdays and weekends for early adolescents. Second, analyzing the factors affecting media usage types, using “general low usage” and “TV usage” as the reference groups, low life satisfaction, low level of parent’s media use control, ample leisure time, and long smartphone usage time by adolescents were associated with a higher likelihood of using game and entertainment YouTube usage during both weekdays and weekends. Additionally, longer smartphone usage time by adolescents and their parents increased the likelihood of using TikTok, and low self-affirmation and lengthy smartphone usage were linked to a higher probability of using educational YouTube content on weekdays. Third, the media usage types during weekdays and weekends influenced the level of smartphone addiction. Specifically, groups predominantly using game and entertainment YouTube or TikTok had higher levels of smartphone addiction.
