Abstract
This study observed eye movements in elementary and upper grade students while reading two basic types of texts (explanatory and narrative), and explored the effect of text type according to the reading comprehension level. The participants were 44 elementary students in their 5th or 6th grades, composed of 16 low-level, 13 middle-level, and 15 high-level reading comprehenders. Eye movements were tracked while reading the two types of texts, and then eye-movement patterns were analyzed focusing on fixation and saccade. All three groups showed the effect of text type of staring at the explanatory text longer, short saccade, and low reading rate. Compared with middle and high-level reading comprehenders, low-level reading comprehenders did not exhibit significant differences in regression rate, but displayed significant differences in total number of fixations, fixation duration, total number of saccades, saccade distance, and reading rate. It was confirmed through eye-movement patterns that low-level reading comprehenders were more affected by text types. It was suggested that language processing related to reading comprehension can be confirmed by examining the eye-movement characteristics observed while reading texts.
