Abstract
In science learning, reading scientific sentence is a very important factor, not only in terms of acquiring knowledge, but also affecting the development of scientific thinking. In this study, we used eye tracking techniques to examine the characteristics to reading scientific sentences of high school students, and attemped to find out strategies for effective reading of scientific sentences by examining the differences between students with high comprehension of scientific sentences and those with low. We investigated the frequency of scientific terms in 105 high school science textbooks, and extracted sentences containing both low-frequency(frequency of less than 26) and high-frequency scientific terms(frequency of more than 1,000). 10 sentences were extracted from textbook and after modifing and combining total 6 sentences were made for test. The 331 high school students in the metropolitan area participated eye-tracking tests, difficulty tests, and comprehension test. We analyzed the results of three tests and compared the reading process of the high and low understanding group. The results have shown that students with low comprehension are affected by the length of words, the level of words, and the number of scientific terms, whereas students with high comprehension are only affected by word levels. It is generally known to have higher attention and more regressions in reading difficult sentences, but this trend has not been seen in students with low comprehension. And when encountering difficult scientific terms, high comprehension students paid attention to everyday words around term, while low comprehension students showed a characteristic of paying attention only to the difficult term itself. Finally, comprehension also tends to fail to grasp the content if it is read quickly in sentences that are felt to be easy in both high and low groups. In short, four factors that affect the understanding of scientific sentences have been found: word factors, repetition reading, content identification through context, and reading speed.
