Abstract
This paper analyzed learners' eye movements in response to 'wing questions' presented during text reading in an elementary Korean textbook. It explored how wing questions are actually perceived by learners, at what point they are read, and how much attention they receive. The analysis showed that the wing questions were mostly ignored or not sufficiently gaze-fixed. There was also a discrepancy between the eye-tracking results and the learners' self-reports, suggesting that the learners were unconsciously exploring visual information without realizing it. These findings suggest that wing questions are limited in their ability to engage learners' attention due to their design and placement. In particular, the low awareness and attention to wing questions suggests that they are not performing well as a pedagogical device. Based on our findings, we propose pedagogical implications for improving the way wing questions are presented in Korean language textbook of elementary school.
