Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze research trends in the development and validation of career identity measures both domestically and internationally, systematically examining their types, characteristics, and constructs to propose directions for future research on scale development in South Korea. For this purpose, academic papers and theses published during 1965~2024 were reviewed comprehensively, analyzing the conceptual and theoretical foundations, factor structures, reliability, validity, and target populations of existing career identity measures. The results are as follows: First, career identity scales were actively developed internationally from around 1965, whereas in Korea, research on career identity gained momentum from the late 1990s, primarily through translated international scales. Second, career identity scales can be categorized into two groups based on measurement targets: individual characteristic factors and career identity statuses. Third, career identity was confirmed as a multidimensional and broad concept encompassing cognitive, emotional, and behavioral dimensions beyond simply "what one wants to become," incorporating aspects such as "why it matters to oneself" and "what one is doing to achieve it." Fourth, a total 62 sub-factors from existing career identity scales were identified, categorized into 10 groups according to the career preparation process. Fifth, culturally and group-specific career identity factors were also identified. Sixth, international scales targeted diverse groups including adolescents, university students, graduate students, adults, professionals, and nurses, while domestic scales were largely limited to adolescents and university students. Seventh, future research in Korea needs to expand the scope of research populations, increase longitudinal studies, and conduct multicultural research. This study synthesizes the achievements and limitations of existing career identity assessment tools, proposing future research directions essential for career identity measurement in the turbulent career environment of the Fourth Industrial Revolution in a global context.
