Abstract

This study explores how a Korean-Chinese pre-service English teacher with non-autonomous motivation interprets and reconstructs teacher identity through a 14-week teaching practicum in a Korean-Chinese middle school. Particular attention is paid to how ethnic positionality, ideological nature of English education, and institutional context of the practicum interact to generate tension and transition in the formation of teacher identity. The participant was a Korean-Chinese pre-service English teacher enrolled in a university located in A city in China with a high concentration of Korean-Chinese residents. The practicum was conducted at a Korean-Chinese middle school in the same city. Applying interpretative phenomenological analysis, the study analyzed in-depth interview data (totaling 58,479 characters) collected before, during, and after the practicum. The analysis identified four core themes in the process of identity formation: (1) prior to the practicum, repressed career identity and indirect agency; (2) during the practicum, disruption of teacher identity and the emergence of autonomy; (3) during the practicum, identity tensions and interpretations arising from the interplay between ethnic positionality and English education ideology; and (4) after the practicum, identity reconstruction and career realignment through emotional experiences and interpersonal interactions. This study reveals that the identity of pre-service English teachers in multi-ethnic contexts does not follow a linear path but is shaped through the dynamic interaction of cultural, institutional, and emotional factors. This offers implications for designing practicum programs and teacher education policies that are responsive to the experiences of ethnic minority pre-service teachers.
