Abstract
This study empirically examines the effect of a social studies news curation lesson that deals with partisan issues on high school students’ political tolerance. Today’s social-media-driven news environment supplies users with highly personalised information, thereby deepening political polarisation. In this context, an educational intervention to foster political tolerance is urgently required. Accordingly, this study investigates whether a news-curation lesson in social studies can enhance the political tolerance of high-school students. The study involved 182 second-year high school students. The experimental group received a news-curation lesson on the partisan issue, while the control group attended a traditional lecture on the same topic. Both lessons focused on the issue of basic income. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses identified two valid factors of political tolerance: Acceptance of Political Opinions and Permission of Political Expression. Students in the news-curation group scored significantly higher on overall political tolerance than those in the lecture group. Factor-level analyses also showed significant advantages for the curation group in both Acceptance of Political Opinions and Permission of Political Expression. The first factor measures the internal acceptance of opposing views, while the second measures willingness to allow expression of dissenting opinions in public. These findings indicate that the news-curation lesson goes beyond improving information-handling skills, serving as an effective educational tool to strengthen democratic citizenship.
