Abstract
This study examines the ways in which the type of argument models used in presenting dissonant opinions shapes adolescents' political tolerance in issue-centered instruction. In this research, attention is paid to the problem of dissonant opinions that have remained relatively unanswered so far in issue centered instruction of social studies classrooms. This study set out to pursue the two questions:1. the question of whether being exposed to 'dissonant opinions' in issue centered instruction may affect the level of political tolerance 2. the relationship between different 'argument models of dissonant opinions' and political tolerance in issue-centered instruction. In this study, the argument models of dissonant opinions refer to the two types of reasoning: deductive or inductive reasoning. The former can be characterized as an argument that puts an emphasis on universal values such as liberty and equity. In a sharp contrast, the latter grounds its argument on the basis of the details of facts and experts' opinions. Both argument models of dissonant opinions employed in constructing research instruments drew on Toulmin's reasoning models. The main findings can be summarized as follows:First, students who had an opportunity to encounter dissonant opinions tended to show higher level of political tolerance than those who did not. This finding suggests that the political tolerance based on understanding of counterparts' argument can be enhanced when one contacts with dissonant opinions. Second, it turned out that the type of argument models of dissonant opinions made an impact on political tolerance. Students who experienced the inductive argument model tended to form relatively positive political tolerance than those who experienced the deductive argument model. It is noted that previous research has a tendency to draw attention to the role of issue-centered instruction in social studies classrooms in terms of promoting higher-order thinking or rational decision making. Given these findings illustrated above, it is critical to acknowledge the relationship between issue-centered education and political tolerance as a part of extended concept of citizenship. Moreover, it is important for social studies educators to explore various aspects of issue-centered instruction based on a broad range of theoretical approaches, thus opening up possibilities for a more dynamic social studies classrooms.
