Abstract
This study empirically investigates the impact of disagreement exposure types—active engagement and observational exposure—on high school students’ political attitudes in the context of social studies instruction using controversial issues. A four-session instructional unit was designed and implemented with 237 first-year students at a general academic high school. Pre- and post-surveys were conducted to measure changes in students’ political tolerance and intention to participate politically. The analysis revealed that disagreement exposure effectively promoted political tolerance, with greater improvement observed in the active engagement groups. In contrast, significant improvement in political participation intention was found only in the observational groups, supporting previous findings that direct engagement may induce social responsibility stresses that suppress overall participation levels. The results of the multiple regression analysis further substantiated the varying impacts associated with different types of disagreement exposure. These findings highlight the importance of aligning disagreement exposure strategies with educational objectives and adjusting instructional design to accommodate different modes of student participation.
