Abstract
The Hebrew Bible does not have the nouns corresponding to ‘marriage’ as found in the Korean version, but rather uses other expressions by combining several words with the verbs, !tn, xql, afn, byvh, !tx, l[b etc. For example, the marriage is described as ‘give a woman as a wife’(!tn), ‘take a woman as a wife’(xql), ‘bring a woman’(afn), ‘dwell with a woman’(byvh), ‘form a family with a woman’(!tx), and ‘give a master to a woman’(l[b). The most used expression includes the verb !tn and xql. Frequent references to theses expressions in the Hebrew Bible indicate these were widely used terms at the time. afn, byvh, !tx, l[b are less used probably due its later origin. The expressions with the verb !tn, xql in conjunction with ‘as a wife’ (hval or hva) clearly state the meaning of ‘given as a wife’ or ‘take as a wife’. The expressions with the verb afn describe the marriage without payment(rhm) due to poverty or violence. The verb !tx applies to the marriage of convenience for political, social or economical reasons and describes the marriages result in the change of social status or wealth. The verb l[b is used for the situation where a women was sold for marriage as it emphasizes the husband as a ‘master’ of wife. This not only indicates the husband’s ownership of woman, but also the change in wife’s legal status in the society and family. As observed above, the marriage in Israel took a form of transaction between the fathers by giving and taking. Other form of marriages like marriage to slave or prisoner, levirate marriage, polygamy, marriage within the family blood line and marriage to non Hebrew can be found, showing many complex complimenting yet contradicting elements of the Hebrew marriage. Historically, marriage functioned as reinforcing the bonds between two families, leading to greater accumulation of wealth, and strengthening the community. As such, any marital arrangement has not been free from the necessary negotiations related to its functions. Conjugal terms and expressions appearing in the Old Testament are generated from their institutional background and should be understood in terms of its unique processes of negotiation.
