Abstract

This study investigates the possibility that adoption, though not legally institutionalized in ancient Israel, was practiced informally and flexibly according to social needs. While previous research has focused primarily on kinship-based adoption or theological metaphors, this paper analyzes five biblical passages—Genesis 15:2–4; 1 Chronicles 2:34–35; Ezra 2:61–63; 10:44; and Ezekiel 16:3–7a—that illustrate cases of non-kin adoption. The cases of Eliezer, Jarkha, and the Barzillai family involve attempts by childless male heads of households to integrate non-kin individuals into the family for the purposes of inheritance and lineage continuation. These resemble adoption practices found in Ancient Near Eastern documents. Although Ezekiel 16 presents a metaphor rather than an actual adoption event, its use suggests that the concept of adoption was culturally familiar and positively perceived in Israelite society. This study proposes that, while adoption was not a widespread institutional practice in ancient Israel, it was a socially accepted form of family formation in specific circumstances.
