Abstract

This article attempts to explore what the Hebrew verb 'knowing' (yada`) and its noun 'knowledge' (da`at) mean in the Book of Hosea. Those expressions are distinctive with 'emeth' and 'hesed' in the Book of Hosea. In research of the Hebrew word ידע it is to be noted of two remarkable scholars; D. Winton Thomas and H.B. Huffmon. The former has released more than 10 articles on the Hebrew verb 'to know.' For Thomas yada` has more than just 'to know'; it not only refers to 'care for' with intimacy of relationship, but also to 'be made submissive, still, quiet.' The latter contributes to find a covenantal background of yada`. According to Huffmon, it was used in legal term between suzerain and vassal. In other words, yada` in Hebrew implies mutual recognition. Hosea might know what yada` means as such. Thus, it is quite natural that one of the best examples of mutual knowledge should be sexual knowledge and experience. For Hosea the Hebrew yada` represents relationship between Yhwh and Israel. In this regard, the absence of the knowledge of God must be a target of prophetic criticism. "I desire hesed and not sacrifice, da'at rather than burnt offering" (Hos 6:6). In addition, this essay tries to find out the reciprocity of Hebrew verb yada` under discussion. For several verbs, such as kiss, hug, love, dance, there is no distinction between subject and object because both share the role with each other. The Hebrew verb 'yada`' could be also included to the aforementioned verb group. The reason is because the verb yada` implies two sides action, as noted above. Marriage between husband and wife, covenant between suzerain and vassal one is subject, the other is object simultaneously, and vice versa. The Hebrew verb 'yada`' does not work one way, but two ways with mutual commitment and responsibility. That is the distinctive idea of Hebrew thought.
