Abstract

Relations between North and South Korea has been shifting from the Cold War to an era of reconciliation and cooperation, which directly or indirectly will influence the unification education. In relation to this change, this study give attention to socio-cultural approach in unification education. System-centered approach or approach based on political system is characteristic of government-centered, ideology-oriented, and aomparison-focused. In contrast to this approach, Socio-cultural approach in unification education would give emphasis not on comparing our Korea society against the other, but on seeking out the unique characteristics of each respective society. Especially, Socio-cultural approach in unification education is concerned about life-world. Life-centered education comprises such elements as language use, psychological traits, cultural custom, and social roles. Therefore, socio-cultural approach in unification education put emphasis on a mutual understanding in North-South Korea. Socio-cultural approach in unification education has many new features. First, Socio-cultural approach secure a identity in unification education of moral education. Second, this approach give an opportunity of free communication network in North-South Korea. Third, this approach build up positive consciousness of national community. Fourth, Socio-cultural approach in unification education set importance on preparation for the social integration in Unified Korea. Lastly, this approach covers various theories of unification education, for exemple, peaceful education, multicultural education, care education, citizenship education.
