사회생물학과 윤리학의 통섭에 대한 비판적 고찰

윌슨은 윤리학과 사회생물학의 통섭의 필요성을 강력하게 제기하고, ‘윤리학의 생물학’을 통해서 윤리를 남김없이 설명하고, 더 지속적인 도덕 규범을 선택할 수 있다고 주장한다. 사회생물학은 도덕 현상에 대한 우리의 이해를 증진시킬 수 있고, 우리가 선택할 수 있는 메타윤리학적 입장을 제한함으로써 메타윤리학의 발전에 기여할 수 있다. 또한 사회생물학은 잘못된 사실에 기초한 도덕 규범의 오류를 제거하고, 합리적인 규범윤리학을 정립하는 데에도 도움을 줄 수 있다. 그러나 사회생물학적 사실로부터 도덕 원리를 도출할 수는 없다. 그러한 시도는 자연주의적 오류를 범하는 것이다. 도덕 규범의 정립과 정당화는 윤리학의 생물학화에 의해서는 달성될 수 없는 윤리학의 자율성의 영역이다. 이 영역에 대한 통섭의 요구는 부당하다. 그러므로 윤리학의 생물학화를 통해서 윤리를 모든 층위에서 설명할 수 있다는 윌슨의 주장은 잘못된 것이다. 윤리학에는 생물학화로 설명할 수 없는 자율성의 영역이 존재한다.
Abstract
E. O. Wilson insists on consilience of sociobiology and ethics, and argues that 'biology of ethics' will make it possible to explain ethics at all depth and to select a more deeply understood and enduring code of moral values. Sociobiology can help us to increase understanding of moral phenomena, and contribute to developing meta-ethics by means of limiting the meta-ethical options that we may choose in case of accepting the sociobiological explanations of morality. Also sociobiology can contribute to correcting the mistakes of moral norms which are based of the false knowledge and establishing a rational normative ethics which are based of the objective scientific knowledge. Notwithstanding, We cannot deduce or deride moral principles from the sociobiological facts. The attempt deriding moral claims from factual claims commits the naturalistic fallacy. The biology of ethics cannot provide the establishing and justifying moral norms for ethics. The establishing and justifying moral norms is the autonomous theoretical realm of ethics. The requirement of consilience in this realm is inappropriate because it violates autonomy of ethics. Therefore, Wilson's argument that biologicization of ethics make it possible to explain ethics in all depth is a false argument. There is an autonomous realm of ethics which cannot be reducible to sociobiology or biology of ethics.
