Abstract
Entering 1970s, Edward Wilson asserted daringly the theory of evolution should explain morality at all depths. Let alone what this statement means exactly, it caused many controversies. It still reproduces many new arguments nowaday. This essay examines the persuasiveness of Wilson's assertion. To do so, I divided and interpreted his assertion as follows: (1) the theory of evolution can grasp the real intrinsic motivation of morality, (2) it can illuminate the evolutionary character of all moral judgments, (3) it can reconstruct ethics. I maintain his assertion is generally not persuasive anyway. If we interpret his assertion as (1), it cannot avoid the criticism which is given to psychological egoism. Interpreting his assertion as (2), it deserve criticism of not having explained all the moral judgment sufficiently. Lastly it is not evident the reason why moral sense which is given by evolution should be ultimate standard of morality. And as there are other kinds of moral judgments, we cannot support particular meta-ethical position by the explanation of moral sense which is given by evolution.
