초록

이 글의 목적은 철학적 윤리학의 주요 쟁점 중 하나인 ‘자연주의적 오류’의 의미론적 고찰을 매개로 ‘윤리적 자연주의’와 대비되는 ‘윤리적 구성주의’의 합당한 개념틀을 제안해 보려는 것이다. 이를 위해 맨 먼저 논자는 ‘자연주의적 오류’를 ‘사실에서 가치를 연역하는 논리적 오류’, 즉 ‘과학이 발견한 자연적 사실을, 도덕적 선악과 정사를 판별할 척도로 호출하는 오류’로 한정하는 의미론적 사전 작업을 수행했다. 다음으로 논자는 그러한 오류의 유력한 전형으로 오늘날 유행하는 진화론적 윤리학의 ‘혈연 이타성’ 및 ‘호혜적 이타성’ 가설을 지목해 그 안에 스며든 오류의 양상을 비판적으로 분석해 보았다. 끝으로 논자는 ‘도덕이란 무도덕적 세계에 투사된 인간 이성의 구성물’이란 취지의 ‘윤리적 구성주의’ 관점을 ‘윤리적 자연주의’의 대립항으로 제시한 후 도덕적 가치를 과학적 사실과 관련짓는 비자연주의적 방식, 즉 ‘환원’이 아닌 ‘매개’의 방식을 ‘윤리와 과학의 상보성’ 테제 아래 옹호해 보았다.

Abstract

The aim of this essay is to propose a reasonable conceptual framework of ‘ethical constructivism’ as an antithesis of ‘ethical naturalism’ through the medium of the semantic examination of ‘naturalistic fallacy’, one of the main issues of philosophical ethics. To achieve this, first I defined the ‘naturalistic fallacy’, with a semantic strictness, as the ‘logical fallacy of deducing the judgements of value from the judgements of fact’, namely the ‘fallacy of appealing to the natural facts discovered by science as a measure of distinguishing moral good and evil, right and wrong’. Next I suspected the ‘kin altruism’ and ‘reciprocal altruism’ hypothesis of contemporary evolutionary ethics of a typical case of the very fallacy and critically analyzed a few aspects of its fallacy. Finally I proposed the perspective of ‘ethical constructivism’ to the effect that the moral is a construct of human reason projected into the amoral natural world as an antithesis of ‘ethical naturalism’ and vindicated a non-naturalistic method of connecting the moral values to the scientific facts, which is not the ‘reduction’ but the ‘mediation’, under the thesis of ‘complementarity of ethics and science’.
