도덕적 인테그러티 해명을 통한 전문직 윤리의 새로운 가능성 탐구

이 글의 목적은 전문직 윤리의 새로운 가능성을 찾기 위한 일종의 예비적 시도로서 인테그러티 개념을 정교하게 분석하여 도덕적 인테그러티 개념을 도출하는 데 있다. 인테그러티 개념은 실천윤리에서 매우 중요하면서도 자주 인용되는 개념이지만, 그러한 핵심적인 비중에도 불구하고 엄밀한 의미부여 작업이 이루어지지 못했다. 그 동안 인테그러티 개념을 도덕적 차원과 무관하거나 느슨하게 규정하는 시도들, 나아가 협소한 윤리이론의 틀 안에 가두고자 하는 시도들은 실천윤리 영역에서 인테그러티의 위상과 역할을 제대로 파악하지 못한 데서 나온 것이다. 인테그러티에 대한 해명작업이 단순히 도덕적 정당화뿐만 아니라 보다 포괄적인 측면에서 도덕적 관점을 요구한 것은 바로 이 때문이다. 도덕적 인테그러티는 행위자의 성격의 통합을 강조하면서도 상식적 도덕성에 부합하는 덕목으로서 도덕 규범을 충실하게 고수하려는 행위자의 지속적인 노력과 성취의 측면이 강하게 반영된 개념이다. 인테그러티 개념은 지금까지 전문직의 삶과 실천에서 제대로 강조되지 못했던 것이 사실이다. 전문직이라는 직업적 이상과 전문직의 사회적 현실 간의 간극이 크게 벌어지고 있는 지금의 상황에서 전문직 종사자의 책임 있는 행동과 사회적 책임의식뿐만 아니라 인테그러티 함양은 더욱 중요해지고 있다. 이런 측면에서 전문직 종사자들이 인테그러티를 고양시키는 것은 전문직 실천에서 매우 어려운 작업이지만 반드시 성취해야 할 중대한 사안이라 할 수 있다. 전문직은 도덕적 인테그러티를 육성할 만한 능력과 역할 책임을 가지고 있다. 이른바 ‘교화된 전문직’으로서 그에 상응하는 도덕적 인테그러티를 소유하는 것, 이것이 현재 전문직 윤리에서 요청되는 중대한 사안일 것이다.
Abstract
This Article attempts to define and categorize the concept of integrity as a method for enhancing good practice of professional ethics. More specifically, this article aims at clarifying the essential feature of moral integrity through the detailed analysis of integrity. Integrity is one of the most important and oft-cited concept in practical ethics, especially research ethics. But it has received far less rigorous analysis from scholarship in comparison with its conceptual importance. Thus, this study calls in question the meaning of moral integrity. This study is organized as follows. The second section summarizes the personal aspects of integrity. According to self-integration and identity views of integrity, integrity is a matter of persons integrating various parts of their personality into a intact whole and a condition of a person’s holding steadfastly true to their commitments. The third section suggests a way of understanding integrity as a social virtue. There is a generally unrecognized but crucial social dimension to the moral integrity. Integrity is a master virtue and social category. The social character of integrity is a matter of a person’s proper regard for their own best judgement and above all, it is consistent with a wide range of moral convictions, common morality. The fourth section deals with integrity in relation to research ethics. Especially, research integrity has to regard as a central notion in the performance of responsible conduct of research. The final section summarizes the importance of integrity in professional ehtics. Moral integrity is the character trait of a coherent integration of reasonabley stable, justifiable moral values and it plays a central role in professional ethics as a primary virtue.
