인격통합성과 도덕성의 관계 고찰을 위한 방법론적 제언

이 글의 목적은 인격통합성과 도덕성의 관계 고찰이 가진 문제적 성격을 제시하는 것이다. 인격통합성 개념 규정의 어려움은 인격통합성이 도덕성과 맺고 있는 관계에서 비롯한다. 필자는 인격통합성을 단독으로 정의 내리는 이론들의 한계를 제시한다. 그리고 그 이론들이 도덕성 개념과 관련하여 모색되어야 하는 이유를 해명한다. 필자는 인격통합성과 관련하여 두 가지 물음을 구분한다. 첫째는 ‘도덕적 본성 물음’으로서, 그것은 ‘악한 원리를 추구하는 사람이 인격통합성의 소유자일 수 있는가?’이다. 둘째는 ‘개념적 물음’으로서, ‘인격통합성을 소유한다는 것은 과연 어떤 의미인가?’이다. 이 두 물음은 연관되어 있어 그것들에 대한 개별적 모색은 불가능하다. 필자는 이 두 물음에 대한 통찰에서 ‘개념적 물음’에 답하는 인격통합성 개념 이론이 갖출 최소한의 요건을 도출한다. 첫째, 도덕적 본성 물음과 개념적 물음이 얽혀 있는 사태의 심각성을 고려할 때, 도덕적 본성 물음을 아예 고려하지 않는 이론은 인격통합성 개념 이론으로 적합하지 않다. 둘째, 인격통합성 개념 이론은 인격통합성이 무엇인지에 대한 해명 가능성을 갖출 뿐만 아니라 보통 사람들이 그 개념을 사용할 때 평가적 용어로 사용한다는 사실을 반영해야 한다. 이어지는 논의에서는 ‘도덕적 본성 물음’이 가진 문제를 명확히 하기 위해 그 물음과 혼동될 수 있는 물음들과 차별화를 시도한다. 필자의 이러한 논의는 인격통합성과 도덕성의 관계 해명을 위한 추후 작업의 기초를 마련해줄 것이다.
Abstract
In this paper I present the necessity of examining the relationship between integrity and morality and the problematic nature of such examination. L. McFall provides the difficulty of grasping the concept of integrity and points out that a person who seeks only approval by others or pursues only his own pleasure cannot be regarded as the owner of integrity. B. Williams uses integrity as a tool for critique of utilitarianism. With a powerful example, Williams argues that following utilitarianism leads to the betrayal of integrity. Despite these major discussions, it is difficult to find a view that clearly defines the concept of integrity. I argue that such difficulty stems from the relationship it has with morality. I distinguish two related questions on integrity. The first is the moral nature question, which is ‘Can a person pursuing evil principles possess integrity?’ The second is the conceptual question, which is ‘What does it mean to possess integrity?’ I argue that these two questions are related and that separate searches for them is in vain. From the insight into these two questions, I derive the minimum requirements for the conceptual theory. First, considering the seriousness of the situation in which the moral nature question and the conceptual question are intertwined, a theory that disregards the moral nature question is inadequate as an answer to the conceptual question. Second, a conceptual theory must reflect the fact that ordinary people use the word of integrity as an evaluative term. This discussion will pave the way for the further work to explain the relationship between integrity and morality.
