Abstract

Usually teachers are supposed to have higher morality and ethics than ordinary people. That is because teaching and education is basically an ethical activity. Indeed eduction is impossible without teachers' moral character as a model. However, in a modern changing society, it is quite controversial what kinds of teacher ethics are needed, and to what extent teachers should be moral and ethical. The purpose of this paper consists in analysing the conflicts among teacher ethics according to the views of teaching, and reexamining the nature of professional teacher ethics. In chapter 2, I explain the general needs and contents of teacher ethics. In chapter 3, I explain the conflicts among teacher ethics according to the three views of teaching, i.e. a view of teaching as as a holy calling, as a labor, and as a profession. There are two ways to interpret the different views of teaching. One is to understand them as 'a job', and the other is to understand them as 'an attitude or purpose of performing the job'. Most people accept that teaching is a professional job. Thus, the question is about the attitudes of performing teaching job. I argue that teachers are required to have industrious attitudes of laborers, professional arts of masters, and the devotional calling of ministers. Here we can find the relationship among three views of teaching. In chapter 4, I reexamined the nature of professional teacher ethics. The characteristic of professionalism should not be limited to technological or positivistic efficiency. Rather it should be understood with integrity including teaching internal goods or ethics of each subject-matter. I also argue that we have to deal with the conflict between teaching public goods and non-public goods, rather than the conflict between pursuing public goods and private interests. A teacher as a professional should teach students with moral character, civic ethics and with a calling from God. And a teacher should set a moral or ethical example for students. However, a teacher cannot be a saint. Thus, we have to explore the essential meaning of teaching as a profession in a more concrete way, finding the limitations of teacher ethics.
