윤리문화연구의 도덕교육의 목표와 적용에 관한 연구 -Matthew Arnold의 문화 개념을 중심으로-

Abstract

This article focuses on examining the purpose of moral education and its application in ethical culture studies. The main aim of moral education is to form virtuous and excellent characters by teaching common rules and universal ethical values in various ethical practices. In ethical cultures as ethical ways of lives that have been lived in different times, areas, or groups, the elements of specific locality or natural environment is also considered in ethical ways. Moral education is to improve ethical levels in each culture. This is the same task of ethical culture studies to reflect ethical practices in the variety and distinctiveness of cultures. In ethical culture studies, there are three dimensions to be considered: the practices of ethical lives, ethical values and knowledge, and distinctiveness in history and environment. The present lives are the products of human experience accumulated in ethical values and knowledge, and distinctiveness in history and environment of the history of lives. Only right reason is to give a desirable direction toward the perfection, the balance between two forces of right thinking and doing in human lives. This feature of ethical culture studies is utilized to improve the students’ abilities of ethical sensitiveness, ethical judgement, ethical motivation and ethical character in moral subject education. In addition, it can play an important role in reforming the ethical ways of certain groups in general, or enable us to have the overriding concern specific type of each group or member in multicultural societies.
