다윈의 진화론에 의해 서막을 올린 윤리의 생물학화 시도는 스펜서에 의해 사회적 다윈주의로 이어졌다. 그러나 19세기의 윤리의 생물학화 시도는 무어가 제기한 자연주의적 오류 논증에 의해 사실상 폐기된 연구 프로그램이 되었다. 20세기에 들어서 윌슨은 사회생물학을 바탕으로 윤리의 생물학화를 시도한다. 윌슨은 윤* 이 논문은 2015학년도 한국초등도덕교육학회 연차학술대회에서 동일한 제목으로 발표된 논문을 수정․보완한 것임. 2 윤리연구 제103호리의 생물학화를 통해서 윤리의 기원과 발달을 진화적으로 해명할 뿐만 아니라, 기존의 윤리 규범을 평가하고 새로운 윤리 규범을 도출한다. 나아가 윌슨은 무어의 ‘자연주의적 오류론’ 자체가 오류라고 비판한다. 윌슨의 비판은 무어의 비자연주의를 논박하는 데는 성공하였으나, 흄의 법칙을 넘어서지는 못하였다. 그러나 자연적 사실과 도덕 규범이 무관할 것이라고 가정하는 것은 역으로 ‘반자연주의적오류’를 범하는 것이다. 윤리의 생물학화의 가장 중요한 이론적 과제는 자연주의적오류와 반자연주의적 오류를 넘어서 현대 과학-정합적인 윤리학, 특히 생물학-정합적인 윤리학을 정립하는 것이다. 레이첼즈는 흄의 법칙에 대한 보다 온건한 접근 방법으로 귀추법을 제안한다. 귀추적 추리에 의해서 ‘사실/존재’와 ‘가치/당위’는논리적 함의 관계가 아니라 ‘증거’ 또는 ‘지지’ 근거의 실제적 관계를 형성한다
Abstract
Charles Darwin made an attempt to study the biologicization of ethics on the basis of his own theory of evolution. Darwin’s attempt to biologicize ethics was led to social Darwinism which H. Spencer ardently espoused. However, the study for the biologicization of ethics in the 19th century was criticized for committing the ‘naturalistic fallacy’ by G. E. Moore. As a result, the research program was actually regarded as discarded. In the 20th century, E. O. Wilson tried again the biologicization of ethics on the basis of sociobiology. Wilson attempts to explain the biological origin and development of morality, to evaluate the traditional ethical norms, and to produce the new ethical norms by means of sociobiology. Furthermore, he criticizes Moore’s theory of naturalistic fallacy itself as an error. However, though Wilson may succeed in refuting Moore’s non-naturalism, he fail to overcome Hume’s Law. On the other hand, the ethical theories which presume that moral norms are irrelevant to natural facts commit the ‘counter-naturalistic fallacy’. The most important theoretical challenge for biologicization of ethics is to establish modern science-coherent ethics, especially biology-coherent ethics beyond naturalistic fallacy and counter-naturalistic fallacy. J. Rachels propose abduction as a moderate approach to Hume’s Law. According to Rachels, fact/‘is’ can not logically entail value/‘ought’, but evidence or support value/‘ought’ by abductive reasoning.
