사회적 통합을 위해서는 정치공동체의 구성원들이 정치적 원칙을 공유하는 데서 더 나아가 훨씬 깊은 수준의 소속감과 일체감을 지녀야 한다. 정치공동체의 구성원들에 대한 강한 연대감의 요구는 하위문화의 다양성이 확대된 다문화 국가의 경우에 보다 중요할 수 있다. 이것이 바로 다문화 국가에서 애국심의 가치에 주목해야 하는 이유이다. 하지만 다문화 국가의 애국심은 민족주의와 결부된 배타적이고 폐쇄된 형태의 전통적인 애국심 관념과는 다른 것이 되어야 한다. 이러한 맥락에서 이 글에서는 다문화 국가의 새로운 정체성의 토대를 반성적이고 성숙한 형태의 애국심의 관점에서 검토하였다. 즉, 다문화 국가에서 요구되는 새로운 애국심으로서 헌법 애국심에 주목하였다. 헌법 애국심은 특정한 국가에서 보편적 권리와 가치가 실현되는 것에 대한 특별한 관심과 헌신을 뜻한다. 보편적 가치와 불편부당성을 지향하는 동시에 특정한 공동체에 대한 충성과 헌신을 강조하는 헌법 애국심은 전통적 의미의 애국심 관념에 내포된 부정적 측면을 극복함으로써 다문화 국가에서 요구되는 애국심의 규범적 대안이 될 수 있다.
Abstract
For social integration, citizens of the political community must have a much deeper sense of belonging and unity beyond sharing political principles. The call for a strong sense of solidarity from the members of the political community may be more important in the case of multicultural states where subcultural diversity has expanded. This is why we should pay attention to the values of patriotism in multicultural states. However, the patriotism of multicultural states should be different from the exclusive and closed form of patriotism associated with nationalism. In this context, this research reviewed the foundation of a new identity of a multicultural state in terms of reflective and mature forms of patriotism. In other words, this study noted the constitutional patriotism as a new patriotism required in multicultural states. In general, constitutional patriotism means a special interest and dedication in realizing universal rights and values in a particular state. The constitutional patriotism, which pursues universal values and at the same time emphasizes loyalty and commitment to a particular state, can be a normative alternative to patriotism required in multicultural states by overcoming the negative aspects inherent in the traditional sense of patriotism.
