최근 국내외에서 애국심에 대한 관심이 부쩍 많아졌다. 이것은 현대 사회에서 개인의 자유와 권리에 근거한 담론들이 성행하여 공동체와 공동선에 대한 관심이 저하한 것에 대한 반작용인 것처럼 보이기도 한다. 그런데 애국심은 의문의 여지가 없을 정도로 자명한 도덕적 가치인가? 본 연구에서는 애국심의 도덕적 지위는 불분명하며, 따라서 애국심은 ‘좋은 사람’이 되기 위한 ‘도덕적 가치’라기 보다는 ‘좋은 시민’이 되기 위한 ‘시민적 덕목’임을 주장한다. 즉 애국심에 대한 도덕적 평가는 애매하나, 정치 공동체나,유지·발전시키기 위해 시민들에게 필요한 덕목치 파악하는 것이 타당하다고 주장한다. 그리고 애국심이 보편적인 도덕성에 어긋나지 않기 위해서 애국심의 의미를 어떻게 새롭게 정립할 것인가에 대해 논의한다.
Abstract
Patriotism is generally defined as love of one's country, identification of it, and special concern for its well-being and that of compatriots. What is moral standing of patriotism? I tried to prove that a patriotic behavior is neither the prohibitive, nor the obligatory and the supererogatory. In this vein I also suggested that patriotism is not a moral duty for 'a good person,' but a civic virtue for 'a good citizen'. The meaning of patriotism has changed according to the varieties of historical circumstances. What is the desirable meaning of patriotism for modern Korean Society? I proposed it was the most crucial for the formation of desirable patriotism that people changed the object of loving from the country of their fatherland to the country that guarantees their liberty and justice politically. And I suggested that patriotism should be constrained by universal justice and common human solidarity. Finally I recommended one of the substantive ways to realize the desirable meaning of patriotism is that people enjoy the freedom to criticize government, including official narratives of political events.
