Abstract

Moral education pursues integrated morality. Integrated morality generally referred to as integration of the factors of cognition, emotion, and behavior has been regarded to be natural to the researchers of moral education and also school teachers. Among the factors of morality, however, there still exist moral philosophical or psychological conflicts. And there is still concern over how to integrate the factors of morality and what ground is needed for that. This study examines the meaning and possibility of ‘embodied mind’ as the empirical ground for integrated morality from the view of moral psychology with Damasio’s researches and arguments and suggests that embodied mind can be the ground for the integration of cognition, emotion, and behavior. For this, the article first examines critical mind of Damasio who criticized Descartes through Spinoza and discusses through what processes emotion works in the construction of embodied mind. The concept of embodied mind implies that the formation of integrated morality should be explained with the formation of ‘mind’ rather than the combination of morality factors solely. Regarding the concept of embodied mind, to form a mind, the study suggests the building of moral environment, classes considering the context of children and teenagers’ lives, and consideration over children and teenagers as emotional beings.
