Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore anti-migration/anti-refugee frame and factors in the development of far right-wing political parties or right-wing populism in Czech Republic. The existing literature suggests that socio-economic, political-institutional, and history-cultural factors affect the increasing support of right-wing populism in Europe. Socio-economic conditions are unfavorable to the development of populism in Czech Republic; Czech Republic demands skilled labor force as emigration rate has long been higher than immigration. Anti-migration discourse is closely related to the discourse of Euroscepticism that enjoys a strong support for sovereignty of Czech Republic that has developed during the Soviet period. Euroscepticism, in this context, was advocated not only by the right-wing populist political parties, but also by left and moderate political parties. Populist rhetoric in Czech Republic appear to be soft than hard Euroscepticism when the main stream of populist demands rejects the policy of refuge quotas for EU member states and excludes anti-EU establishment. In this context, Euroscepticism in Czech Republic can be categorized as a historical/copy-cat model that is influenced by a long search of independence. Populism in Czech Republic, based on a soft Euroscepticism, suggests that anti-migration/anti-refugee discourse can be fledged without a solid challenge of migration and be mobilized in the conflicting socio-political agenda other than migration issues.
