Abstract

The current study investigates Russian dative case as a Constructiseme which changes the meaning of the whole sentence. In conventional grammatical theory, the case was regarded as a filler to fill the slots of the argument structure of a sentence. This means that a case form cannot be used unless the verb has a slot required semantically and syntactically by a particular argument structure. However, the dative case discussed in this paper does not belong to the verb’s argument structure, and the use of the dative case is not motivated by the argument structure but is caused by the change of the semantic characteristics of the sentence. The dative case signifies that a participant is affected by the process or the activity of the sentence and the sentence does not express the activity is just transitive or intransitive. The purpose of this study is to conduct qualitative and quantitative research on the semantic and syntactic characteristics of additional participants. In conclusion, the Russian dative case becomes a Constructiseme that forms a new construction, and the Constructisemes formulate a Constructicon. It aims to provide a starting point for a new direction for research of Russian.
