Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate the process of semantic derivation, which has become an intrinsic attribute of language according to the change of the extralinguistic environment and the need for a new designation, based on the material of Russian nouns. The situational approach is used as a methodology to explain the semantic development of Russian nouns. The subjects of research in previous attempts to elucidate the mechanism of semantic derivation were primarily focused on the material of verbs, which have a high degree of situational representation and are susceptible to context. In this paper, the semantic derivation of nouns that give situational information corresponding to the predicate is also considered to be caused by the contextual realization of the situation. As a result of analyzing the patterns of use of some Russian nouns in utterances, the lexical change is related to the semantic shift from the utterance situation to the word situation. In other words, the situation activated in the utterance is gradually fixed to the meaning of the word itself. The situation indicated by the word changes because the meaning of the word is created in the utterance context representing the specific situation, and the situations described by the word and the sentence in the text interact in a complex way. In texts, nouns not only refer to objects, but also participate in creating situations by providing information about the way the objects are used, their actions, and the participants in the situation. The degree of situationality of a specific noun reveals the ability of the noun to express the situation while it is located somewhere between the verb derivative that can express the situation independently and the concrete noun that expresses only a physical object.
