Abstract
This thesis seeks to take a look at whether historically Russia and Ukraine are inseparable nation-state or not and analyze the reason why Russia waged a war against Ukraine which aspires to join NATO, thereby measuring the effects of the war in Ukraine on the Russian civilization. A fratricidal war among Eastern Slavic nations turned into struggle between Russia and the United States over Ukraine and heralded the prelude to the clash among the great powers in the 21st century. Russia is trying to keep Ukraine to remain in her sphere of influence for securing security and status of great power, whereas the United States intends to deepen Ukraine’s integration into Euro-Atlantic structures. After the demise of the Soviet Union, Russia had to choose her “unique way,” to which Russia is going to make between Europe and Eurasia to shape national identity. Russia’s power elite, in their establishment of theoretical framework for national policy, reflect the ideas of Neo-Eurasianists. An attentive analysis on Neo-Eurasianism will be instrumental in clarifying geopolitical implication of the war in Ukraine and in predicting the future of Russia’s civilization.
