Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze Russia’s Ukraine policy based on Eurasianism, and to explore implications for the better understating of Russian Foreign Policy as well as the meanings of Ukraine crisis. Existing literature explains the Ukraine crisis as realist power struggles, imperial expansion of Russia, conflicts between Ukraine and Russian regimes of different value system and interests, and Putin’s search for domestic political stability. However, there is a growing need to take a serious consideration of Eurasianism, multi-vector approach in foreign policy, and pragmatism as Putin’s administration has long been emphasized the conflict between civilizations, which commends a comprehensive logical links between foreign and domestic considerations of Moscow. Eurasianism, however, appears to be face emerging challenges from the Ukraine crisis, another frozen conflict in the post-Soviet space. First of all, non-Russian Eurasianism, let alone other European countries, casts a skeptical eye on Aleksandr Dugin’s geopolitical Eurasianism. Second, the conflicts between the Orthodox powers on the heart land of Eurasia reveal the limits of cultural Eurasianism of Aleksandr Panarin. Finally, Eurasianism could be reduced to a vector when challenges to the consensus of Russian foreign policy emerge from the Ukraine crisis and deteriorating Russia’s relations with the West.
