Abstract

This study examines the linguistic functions of tautologisms and deictic substitution in contemporary Russian newspaper and publicistic discourse, while also outlining prospects for further research. Modern Russian journalistic style, which aims both to inform and to persuade, makes active use of these phenomena. In this context, tautologism is defined as the deliberate use of synonymous expressions to reiterate the same person or object mentioned in the immediately preceding sentence. Far from being redundant, this phenomenon functions as a form of productive duplication that enhances meaning, specifies information, increases persuasiveness, and ensures textual cohesion. It facilitates memorization and reinforces the intended viewpoint in the reader’s mind. Deictic substitution, by contrast, involves the use of expressions whose referent shifts depending on the discursive context. It concretizes information, creates an “effect of simulated presence,” and fosters deeper reader immersion in the described events. Despite differences in their mechanisms, both phenomena contribute to the effectiveness of information delivery and to the reader’s comprehension of the text. Their combined effect reinforces the defining features of newspaper discourse: tautologism lends authority to the message, while deictic substitution promotes engagement. Future research should further explore the cognitive and sociolinguistic dimensions of these phenomena, their distribution across different genres, and their adaptation within the evolving new media environment.
