Abstract
This study aims to examine the art-historical and cultural significance of Kino-Fot (Кино-фот), a Soviet film and photography magazine founded in 1922. The magazine played a crucial role in establishing the foundation of Constructivist aesthetics during the transitional period from painting to photography and cinema by providing contemporary artists with a space to publish theoretical discourse and experimental works on film (Кино) and photography (фотография). Publisher and editor Alexei Gan (А. Ган) emphasized the concept of socialist kinematographiya, arguing that cinema should function as a task of the proletarian state. This study analyzes texts by key figures including Gan, Kuleshov, Vertov, and Rodchenko published in Kino-Fot to examine the multilayered aspects of visual montage and its Constructivist characteristics. The diverse montage theories—Kuleshov’s technical and psychological montage, Vertov’s kino-glaz (kino-pravda) theory that interprets reality, and Rodchenko’s critical photomontage as an alternative to traditional art— functioned as an open forum for debate through this magazine. Kino-Fot, which served as a venue for early montage theory debates, became an important starting point for forming the theoretical foundation of Soviet film aesthetics development.
