Abstract
Established officially in the Russian Empire in 1870, the Peredvizhniki (The Wanderers) played a leading role in the evolution of Russian art until their dissolution in 1923. For a long time, critics such as Vladimir Stasov and researchers under his influence evaluated the group through a strictly idealistic and aesthetic lens. It was not until 1929 that Aleksei Fedorov-Davydov first drew attention to the group’s commercial nature; since the 1970s and 80s, scholarship in both Russia and the West has adopted a more multifaceted approach to studying the organization. In contrast, domestic research in Korea remains largely confined to the perspectives of Stasov and his followers, with limited attempts to examine the Peredvizhniki from a commercial or profit-oriented standpoint. Despite suffering from severe financial deficits due to the persistent opposition of the Imperial Academy and the ruthless conditions of the art market, the Peredvizhniki did not abandon their moral obligations as artists. They engaged in constant internal debates and sought practical solutions to balance material survival with idealistic values. The ultimate goal of the Peredvizhniki was to secure “creative freedom”—untainted by any external authority—on the foundation of financial independence achieved through individual effort. This shift in value toward autonomy served as the fertile soil that allowed for the birth of numerous masterpieces that would eventually define the brilliance of Russian art history.
