Abstract

In the traditional beliefs and mythology of Turkic peoples, Yaik has been widely revered as the master of water bodies like rivers and lakes, or as a deity associated with floods. In the Altai traditional belief system, Yaik is recognized as a spirit of water and a river god, acting as a mediator between humans and the divine, either as a descendant or part of Ülgen. He occupies a core position within Shamanism as a symbol of purification, fertility, vitality, and boundary protection, thus performing ritual worship and cosmological functions. In contrast, Yaik in the Bashkir epic Ural Batyr is portrayed as a heroic figure—the son of the hero Ural—rather than an object of religious worship. Utilizing his inherent divine abilities, he assists his father in defeating evil spirits and performs a cultural-heroic deed by creating a river for people suffering from water shortages. Although Yaik in both Turkic traditions shares the common symbolic system of ‘water,’ a clear differentiation is observed in his form and function. Specifically, while the Altai tradition emphasizes sacredness and ritual functions, the Bashkir epic highlights the meaning of a narrative hero symbolizing sacrifice and ethical ideals. Consequently, Yaik demonstrates an archetype that transitions from a natural symbol and sacred being to a socio-ethical and narrative subject. This makes him a crucial case study for research into the interaction between myth and epic and the study of cultural memory.
