이 논문의 목적은 문화에 기반을 둔 세계관이 민주주의적 지지를 설명하는 데 유용한 분석 틀이라는 것을 밝히는 데 있다. 민주주의적 지지는 민주주의 공고화의 핵심적인 원천 중 하나다. 민주주의적 지지를 구성하는 다양한 차원을 측정하기 위해 이 논문은 일상적인 사회적 관계에서 교류하며 자연스럽게 만들어지는 선호와 지지에 주목한다. 각 개인들의 특정 삶의 방식에 대한 옹호와 반대는 어떤 (정치적) 대상에 대한 선호와 지지에 의해 표출되고, 그러한 선호와 지지의 형성은 한 집단 내의 소속감과 그 집단 내의 사회적 차이의 용인 여부에 따라 구체화된다. 따라서 민주주의 공고화의 원천으로서 민주주의적 지지에 대한 설명은 사회적 관계를 통해 구체화된 선호와 지지에 기반을 둘 때 더 명확해질 것이다. 이 논문은 2005년 한국에서 시행된 세계가치조사 데이터를 이용해 이러한 이론을 경험적으로 증명한다. 통계분석 결과는 이 이론을 지지한다. 한국의 많은 시민들은 자신들의 삶이 집단에 구속되어지는 정도와 삶의 방식에서 사회적 차이를 허용하는 정도에 따라 민주주의적 지지를 보내는 것으로 나타났다.
Abstract
This article explores the relationship between cultural worldview and democratic support. Democratic support is one of the sources of the consolidation of democracy. To measure various dimensions consisting of democratic support, this article is focused on preferences that emerge from individuals' day-to-day social relations. Defending or opposing a certain manner of political opinion is based upon an individual's preferred way of life, because preferences enlighten individuals on how to figure out what their interests are. Preferences are crystallized by the degree to which the individual's life is prescribed by group membership and social differentiation is permitted within a way of life. In this light, democratic support which contributes to the consolidation of democracy can be explained when we consider the cultural orientations featured in preferring or supporting a political object in a particular way. This article uses the 2005 World Values Survey data to test this theory. The empirical findings show that many Koreans rely on democratic support according to whether their life belongs to an individualistic or a solidaristic way of life in one dimension and to an egalitarian or a hierarchical worldview in the other dimension.
