Abstract

Utilizing the Korea Democracy Barometer survey dataset collected in 2010, this study examines how the ideological orientation of citizens affects their perception of democracy in Korea. It shows that Koreans believe that economic development and equality is more important than political liberty. This study also shows that ideologically conservatives tend to put more priority on economic development over political liberty, and that they prefer the government which allows more political power to the executive. More interestingly, conservatives are more likely to support democratic regime, but they also tend to support non-democratic regimes of military, strong leader, and one-party rule as alternatives to democracy. Based these findings, the author claims that more efforts to internalize the core values of democracy as intrinsic values rather than extrinsic ones for the deepening of democracy in Korea.
