Abstract
This study analyzed military strategies of the U.S. and China through the theory of conventional deterrence and drew results so that the future directivity of the U.S.-China relations could be predicted. As a result, it was found that in the aspect of conventional deterrence, China has driven forward attrition strategy representing active defense strategy and A2/AD strategy that impose lots of losses on the U.S. through in-depth defense in order to deter the U.S. power projection. On the other hand, the U.S. has driven forward blitzkrieg strategy representing Air-Sea Battle and JOAC(Joint Operational Access Concept) that pursue a victory by incapacitating its defense in a short period of time and establishing stable power projection circumstances through a minimum of losses. Through the results above, it is possible to predict the future directivity of the U.S.-China military competition. In the aspect of conventional deterrence, the composition of blitzkrieg strategy vs attrition strategy seems more likely to attain conventional deterrence. Accordingly, if such a composition continues in the future, it will be difficult for the U.S. and China to go smash into each other for the regional supremacy in East Asia. The U.S. pursues blitzkrieg strategy, but it has a domestic political structure difficult to use its military force preemptively. And China pursues attrition strategy, but it is highly likely to require stupendous expenses to win a victory.
