Abstract

This study analyzed the effects of citizens’ ideological disposition, political partisanship, personal damage caused by COVID-19, and the evaluation on the government performance and the Emergency Corona Relief Funds upon their attitudes toward expanding the role of the state including taxation, welfare, and the protection of workers’ rights. The results of analysis were as follows: First, ideological disposition had an evident influence on the citizens’ attitudes, but the influence of partisanship was limited. Second, the experience of personal damage due to COVID-19 and the evaluation on the government responses and the Corona Relief Funds showed a strong correlation with the agreement on strengthening the state role. Third, even among those who did not support the ruling party, positive evaluation of the government’s performance had a systematic correlation with stronger support for expanding the state roles.
