이 연구는 한국사회와 같이 다원화된 민주주의 사회, 나아가 파편사회가 요구하는 새로운 지식인상을 모색하기 위해 근현대 지식인론을 성찰적으로 검토한다. 이를 위해 탈현대적 현실에 비추어 현대성에 기초한 보편적 지식인론, 민중적·진보적 지식인론의 한계를 비판하면서, 대안적 지식인론으로 강수택의 ‘시민적 지식인론’을 살펴본다. 이 연구는 다양한 지식/가치들이 서로 갈등하고 경합하는 다원화된 민주주의 사회에 적합한 지식인은, 한편으로는 민주적 절차에 따라 객관적, 과학적 지식에 기초하는 다양한 지식/가치들 간의 경쟁과 갈등에 개입하는 ‘경합하는 지식인’이며, 다른 한편으로는 공공선과 공공성을 추구하면서, 다양한 시민들이 서로 이해하고, 공감하고, 소통을 통해 타협하고 합의하는 과정에 공적으로 참여하는 ‘공공적 지식인’임을 주장한다.
Abstract
This study reviews reflectively the modern theories of intellectuals in order to explore a new image of intellectuals required in a diversified democratic society and furthermore a fragmented society like Korean society. To this end, it criticizes the limitations of the theories of universal intellectuals, people-oriented intellectuals and progressive intellectuals based on modernity in the light of post-modern reality, and consider Kang Soo-Taek's ‘Theory of Citizen-Oriented Intellectuals’ as an alternative theory of intellectuals. This study argues that the intellectuals who compitable with the diversified democratic society where various knowledge/values conflict and compete with each other are on the one hand ‘agonistic intellectuals’ who intervene in the competition and conflict among various knowledges/values based on objective and scientific knowledge according to democratic procedures, and on the other hand ‘public intellectuals’ who pursue the public good and the public and publicly participate in the process of understanding, empathizing, compromising and agreeing through communication with each other among citizens.
