초록

Purpose: This study aims to examine the structural challenges faced by student-athletes in South Korea under a performance-centered training system, which often marginalizes career education. Using the concept of the Dual Career Pathway (DCP), the study compares domestic policies with international models to identify strategies for supporting student-athletes’ balanced academic and career development. Methods: A literature review was conducted on studies published from 2012 to 2024, sourced from domestic and international academic databases such as RISS, KISS, DBpia, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Keywords included “dual career,” “student-athletes,” and “career transition.” Twenty core documents were analyzed to identify policy structures and outcomes. Results: International models, such as Germany’s Sportelite Schools, Kosovo’s university cooperation model, and the EU Guidelines on Dual Careers, have established integrated systems linking education, sports, and career development. In contrast, South Korea's DCP support remains fragmented due to a lack of institutional continuity, professional career counseling, and cross-sectoral collaboration. Conclusions: To enhance the effectiveness of DCP in Korea, the study recommends (1) building an inter-agency governance system, (2) improving academic flexibility through adaptive timetables and online classes, (3) providing professional training for coaches and teachers, and (4) promoting psychological and career-related support systems. A cultural shift from performance-centered to growth-oriented values is also essential to ensure long-term career sustainability for student-athletes.
